John McCarthy was a prvt. in 125th Pa. and was in the West Woods during the morning of September 17,1862 and moved out with his brigade into the Miller Cornfield and into the battle of Antietam. at 9:00am the 125th Pa. was in the west woods moving toward the Haggerstown Pike and the Dunker Church beyond as their main objective. the next 20mins would see some of the greatest slaughters of the war as Sedgwick's men along with 125th Pa. were caught in a savage CSA counterattack that threw the Union lines into confussion and drove them out of the West Woods, back across the Cornfield to the east and north. The 125th suffered its greatest casualties during those 20mins. during that time Pvt. John McCarthy was killed in action. he was struck by a Confederate bullet that passed threw his head. killing him instantly
