Margaret Assell A graveside service will be held for Gloria Margaret Assell, 83, of Chico, on Thursday, June 1, 2006, at 11 a.m. at Glen Oaks Memorial Park. Gloria passed away Saturday, May 27, 2006, at Chico Care Center.

She was born May 3, 1923, in Chico, to Ben and Louisa Serra. She graduated from Chico High School and attended the Golden State Business School of Commerce. Gloria worked at the Chico Air Base, where she met Albert Assell. They were married March 9, 1946, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Throughout her life she always enjoyed fishing and being in the mountains.

Her survivors include her husband of 60 years, Albert Assell of Chico; two daughters, Mary and son-in-law, Will Nichols of Chico and Sally Bates of Lakehead, Calif.; four grandchildren, Angela Nichols, Mike Nichols, Scotty Bates and Michelle Bates; two great-granddaughters, Mikayla and Kaitlyn Nichols. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Marie Netto and Lucy Ponciano.

The family would like to give special thanks for the loving care that she received at the Chico Care Center. Donations may be made in her memory to the Shriners Children's Hospital or the Esplanade House in care of the Brusie Funeral Home. Published in Chico Enterprise-Record on May 31, 2006
