Born in Seekonk, Massachusetts, John Francis Greene graduated from Brown in 1891. He was immediately made an instructor of Greek and, three years later, an instructor of Latin. He received his Master of Arts degree from Brown in 1901 and was named assistant professor of Roman literature and history in 1911. Greene devoted his entire professional life to teaching at Brown, remaining uninvolved in research and publishing. Students during his time did not consider their Brown education complete without taking a course from "Johnny Greene."

Artist John Frazier was an instructor at the Rhode Island School of Design. He executed Greene's likeness in 1932. The portrait was presented to Brown by Mrs. Albert Granger Harkness and Mr. Albert Harkness, Class of 1909, the year it was painted.
