known as 'Lidge' and her mother, Nina Bell Ramsay, was of English and Scotch -
Irish ancestry. Four children were born to this family; Ethel was the oldest of
three daughters and one son.
Ethel married Hassan Schuman Mohamed, Sr. on April 21, 1924. They became
parents of eight children, five daughters and three sons.

Mama's Dream World Needlepoint Artist Dies
Belzoni, Mississippi - Ethel Wright Mohamed, renowned needlepoint artist and
mother of the State Senate's president pro-tem, died Saturday at St. Dominic
hospital in Jackson, Miss. She was 85. Services will be held at 1pm today at
First Baptist church in Belzoni with burial in Belzoni City Cemetery. Mortimer
Funeral Home has charge.
Mrs. Mohamed's embroidery works recaptured memories of her life, family members,
friends, birds, animals and American scenes.
More than 250 of her needlework and embrodery creations are on display for the
public at the family home known as Mama's Dream World in Belzoni.
"Mrs Mohammed was one of the greatest artists in our nation," said Bill Ferris,
director of the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of
Mississippi. "Her work is particularly striking because of the detail and
expressiveness of faces. It is very difficult, in needle and thread, to evoke
emotion as she did."
Her work was shown in the Smithsonian Institution and at the Renwick Gallery in
Washington, DC. Some of her creations recently were returned from a U S Dept. of
Agriculture tour to Moscow and other parts of the former Soviet Union. For many
years she created in embrodery a piece of artwork to be auctioned for charities
for children with cancer and for heart disease research. More than $250,000 was
raised over the years. She received the Governor's Lifetime Achievement Award
for Excellence in the Arts last year. She was a member of the Order of the
Eastern Star, Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the
Confederacy, Colonial Dames XVII Century, Daughters of American Colonists,
National Society of Daughters of the Colonial Wars and the Craftsmen Guild.
In addition to Sen. Ollie Mohamed, State Senate president pro-tem, Mrs Mohamed,
the widow of Hassan Mohamed, leaves three daughters, Hazel Wilson of Alamo,
California, and Joy Fulcher and Carol Harris Ivy, both of Belzoni; two other
sons, Hassan S. "Buddy" Mohamed, Jr. of Belzoni and Joseph "Bubba" Mohamed of
Inverness; five sisters, Patricia Ann Christopher, Sally D Higginbotham, Pauline
McClain, Gloria Faye Cantrell and Rose Mary Lewis; four brothers, David E
