Charles (Carl) Heinrich Bechly emigrated to America with his parents and siblings in 1852, settling in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Carl married Sophia Keffel there in 1870 and raised five children. He owned and operated the Charles Bechly Cigar Store on the corner of Eighth Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in Sheboygan, which was popular for its large cigar-store Indian on display at the entrance. Carl relocated his family in 1891 from Sheboygan to Chehalis, Washington.
