Merlin L. "Mert" Anderson, 82, of Elkader, died Tuesday, May 24, 2011, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader. He was born in West Union on May 18, 1929, to Mervin Leonard and Lillian Janet (Wold) Anderson. Mert attended Center and Dry Run country schools. He was confirmed at Marion Lutheran Church in Gunder.
On March 31, 1951, he was united in marriage to Lenora Mae Possehl at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader. Three sons were born to this union. Mert served in the United States Army from January 23, 1953, until he was Honorably Discharged on December 31, 1954.Throughout his lifetime, he worked as a dairy herdsman at Rock Crest Farms, a dozer operator at J.C. Costigan Construction, a bus mechanic and bus driver for Central Community Schools and Clayton County Secondary roads for 17 ½ years before his retirement. Following retirement, he worked for K Construction. He continued to help Mike, Greg, Danny and Travis with farm work and wherever he was needed. He was a very active member of Peace United Church of Christ and American Legion Post #106 (where he served as commander the last several years), both in Elkader. Mert was a very caring man and he enjoyed visiting and helping people. Following Lenora Mae's death, he continued visiting folks at Elkader Care Center and helping with Friday Bingo.

Merlin loved his family and enjoyed spending time with all of them. He took great pride in their accomplishments and was in his "glory" when he could be with them, whether it be driving tractor, truck, working on or showing off the family farm and animals.

Survivors include his family, Micheal Lee (Donna) Anderson of Elkader, Gregory Alan (Dawn) Anderson of Elkader, Daniel Joe (Kathy) of Pine Island, MN; grandchildren, Matt (Heather) Anderson of Coon Rapids, MN, Darcy (Kasey) Schaub of Austin, MN; Travis (Tammy) Anderson of Elkader, Melinda (Chad) Nelson of Zumbrota, MN, Tyler and Alex Needham of Pine Island, MN; great-grandchildren, Karter and DeAnna Schaub of Austin, MN; two sisters, Elaine Hanson of Waterloo, Sandra Wieland of Iowa City; brothers in law, Ray (Kay) Possehl, Dennis (Mary) Possehl, Carl (Andrea) Possehl, Dean (Cynthia) Possehl, Logan Rentschler and sister-in-law, Marilyn Possehl; numerous nieces, nephews and many many friends.

Merlin was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lenora Mae, on September 26, 2008; step father, Clifford Boldt; two brothers, one in infancy and Burdette "Bird" Anderson; sister, Sharon in infancy; daughter-in-law, Lois (Stoffel) Anderson; in-laws, Ralph and Lenora Possehl, brothers-in-law, Ralph Hanson and Bruce Possehl, and sister-in-law, Karen Rentschler.
