SPOKANE Kenneth Earl Schell, a former chairman of the Lewiston Library Board and the Idaho State Library Board, died Friday of lung disease at Sacred Heart Medical Center here. He was 60.
Schell was born May 28, 1934, at Quincy, Mass., to John E. Schell and Gladys E. Thorne Schell.
He lived at Quincy until his family moved to Niagara Falls, N.Y., in 1945. There he lived until graduating from high school in 1951, when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and worked as an electrician.
Schell served in Korea, Formosa, Japan, China and elsewhere in the Orient. He was discharged in 1959 and moved to Vallejo, Calif., where he worked for the Department of Defense as a planner and estimator for submarines. He married Thecla C. (Tommie) Hensley July 7, 1956, at Vallejo.
Schell retired in 1970 and he and his family moved to Lewiston two years later.
There he attended Lewis-Clark State College and received a bachelor's degree in social science in 1977, graduating second in his class. Schell ran unsuccessfully for a commissioner's seat in Nez Perce County in 1982.
Schell was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He served as chairman of the Lewiston City Library Board from 1974 to 1979 and in the same capacity for the Idaho State Library Board from 1979 to 1980.
Survivors include his wife of Lewiston; a stepdaughter, Patricia Rock of Napa, Calif.; a stepson, Robert Schaeffer of Reno, Nev.; a half-brother, Duane Johnson of Norfolk, Va.; three half-sisters, Diane Johnson of Niagara Falls, N.Y., Karen Keene of Brockton, Mass., and Gretchen Pomfret of Baltimore; and his mother, Gladys Johnson of Niagara Falls, N.Y.
Cremation will take place and a memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home at Lewiston. The Rev. Jim Aronen of the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center Pastoral Care will officiate.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center Foundation, P.O. Box 816, Lewiston, ID 83501-0816.
Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
