Elisabeth "Beth"
Ferris Allen
7/22/1917 - 3/8/2006

Elisabeth Allen passed away peacefully surrounded by her family, at the home of her daughter, Ida Evans, in Stockton, CA. She was 88 years old.
A native of Palo Alto, CA, she was the daughter of Roxana Stinchfield Ferris and Gordon Floyd Ferris, professors at Stanford University. Beth graduated from Palo Alto High School in 1935. She began college at Lawrence College in Appleton, Wisconsin and then transferred to the University of California at Berkeley in 1937. There she met Charles Francis Allen (Fran) over a Bunsen burner in a geology lab. They married in August 1939 and graduated in 1940 with degrees in Geology.
For the next seven years they traveled extensively. Beth raised the growing family and Fran searched for and mapped oil deposits in the Southwest and Southeast. After a short stay in South Lake Tahoe, the family moved to Palo Alto and then Menlo Park to raise their children. After the passing of her husband (1973) and her mother (1978), she traveled the world to such places as Japan, Alaska, Australia, and the British Isles. One trip was a voyage to the South Atlantic, sponsored by the Planetary Society, to view the passage of Comet Halley. Beth possessed a marvelous intellect, a keen interest in all matters scientific, a dry wit, and a self-effacing sense of humor. A voracious reader, her interests included science, science fiction, natural history, and religion. In the 1980s she was drawn to the Buddhist religion and converted in 1989. She remained a devout Buddhist to the end of her days.
In 2004 Beth moved from Palo Alto to Auburn to be closer to two of her sons. She is survived by her four children, Charles Allen (Roslyn) of Meadow Vista, Ida Evans (Ken) of Stockton, Roger Allen (Susan) of Oakland, and David Allen (Shirley) of Auburn. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Terri Evans Marcellino (Tony), Kristi Evans Rhea (Wes), Roxanne Evans, Sarah Allen, Jessica Allen, Forrest Allen, and Iris Allen and four great-grandchildren, Max, Marco, Elisabeth Rose and Jack. She will also be missed by many friends, including Byron Chen, Phuongchi Le and Phuongchi's children Kurt and Trish.
The funeral service will occur at the Palo Alto Buddhist Temple, 2751 Louis Road, Palo Alto, CA 94303, on Wednesday, March 22, 2006 at 2 p.m. All whom Beth touched are invited. She will be buried in the Ione Cemetery next to Fran. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Palo Alto Buddhist Temple, the Stockton Buddhist Church at 2820 Shimizu Drive, Stockton, CA 95203 and the Hospice of San Joaquin County at 3888 Pacific Avenue, Stockton, CA 95204. Cherokee Memorial Park & Funeral Home of Lodi assisted in making the above arrangements.
