Lonnie enlisted in the Marines delay program, at the age of 17 years old before graduating from Wapello High School. Lonnie was trained as a photographer.
When Lonnie arrived in Vietnam 11 April 1965, where he was assigned to Service Company, Headquarters Battalion, 3rd Marine Division. Lonnie was one of 65 passengers aboard a KF-130F #149802 with 6 crew members, that were returning back to their units in Vietnam after being on R&R. The KF-130F was taking off the Kai Tak Airport when the left port of the wing struck a seawall causing the burst into flames and crashed in the sea. There were a total of 71 people aboard the KC-130F and 59 of them died.
Survived by his parents, Herman K and Lula J Hartsock, and his brother; John Allen and sister; Margaret Joann Hartsock, all of Burlington, Iowa.

His name was added to the WALL in November 1983.
