David, the son of William S. Anderson (deceased) and Jean H. Anderson of Miami FL enlisted in the US Marine Corps on June 20, 1967 in Coral Gables FL. He arrived in Vietnam on November 27, 1967 and was assigned to H&S Company, 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

On February 6, the 3d Battalion CP (Command Post) on Hill 37 in Dai Loc District was hit with an incoming barrage of hostile 82 mm mortar and rifle fire which wounded two Marines. Both men were evacuated to the Station Hospital NSA in Da Nang were PFC Anderson died as a result of his multiple fragmentation wounds from the hostile mortar fire.
