James' nickname was "Jim". His parents were Richard William Purser, and Margaret Elizabeth Bentley. Jim married after the war to 1) Susan Nancy or Nancy S. Hodge, Nov. 24, 1867, Marshall Co. AL, and had children: John Horton or (Hampton); Thomas J. and possibly others per WFT; they migrated to Lee Co., Texas, where Susan Nancy died; then J.M. married:
2) Sarah Jane Sikes, and in 1900, they were in Lee Co. TX census with their children: Arthur S; Francis I. [Frank]; Emerson J; Delmer P; and Florence T; also, were the two older sons, Horton (Hampton) Thomas J. After living in Texas for awhile, they moved into Indian Territory, (OK) to Hughes Co., where some of their children lived and died, and where he and Sarah J. died.
James(Jim) Monroe Purser, enlisted in the 28th AL Inf. Co. B, in Blount Co. AL. The Regiment got to Shiloh too late for the Battle but were in Corinth, MS a few weeks later for battle, fought at Perryville, KY where they took heavy casualties, in Chatanoogie, TN Lookout Mtn, fierce fighting, the Battle of Missionary Ridge and many other places. J.M. fell prisioner of War and landed at Rock Island, Ill. He and many other CSA soldiers in the 28th AL showed their bravery and gallantry in battle, per reports by superior officers. They deserve to be remembered.
