1914 Obituary of Mrs Courtney Nalley
Mrs. Courtney Nalley was born 7 October 1827 in the state of North Carolina. She was summond from earth to heaven 20 April 1914, having reached the age of 86 years, 6 months, and 13 days.
Rev. J. G. Kendall of Waco, together with Pastor J.T. Stanton, conducted the last service over her remains Thursday, April 23, at the Baptist Church, her body having been conveyed here from Granger where she died at the home of H.J. Fowler. The interment took place at the Early Chapel Cemetery by the side of her husband.
At the age of five years, she moved with her parents to Mississippi. While living there she was converted at an early age, uniting with the Missionary Baptist Church at the age of thirteen. In relating her Christian experience she would often say she desired such a great change wrought in her at conversion as was in her father, but not so, for she was yet young and had not become hardened in sin. But our good sister did not doubt having passed from death unto life, because she loved the brethren; a scriptural evidence for which she was so thankful.
Mrs. Nalley had been twice married. Two sons, Osborne and Thomas Bexley, were born to the first union; the latter survives to mourn her departure. In 1864 she married A.M. Nalley. Two sons were born to this union also, one of whom, Milstead Nalley of Austin, survives, but was critically ill and unable to be present at the funeral.
The deceased moved to Texas in 1859 [sic 1869]; united with the Baptist Church here (Lexington) the following year. For a short time she lived in Rockdale, but after the death of her husband returned here. For twenty-two years she made her home with her son, T. J. Bexley.
Mrs. Nalley was a Christian and a Baptist of the truest and most consistent type for seventy-four years. So long as I knew her she never catered to fashion nor worldly pleasures. Her joy was to do His bidding, She attended meetings far and near, wherever she could. Her pastime was reading God's Word, meditating thereon and communing with Him.
She often said she was only waiting for the summons from on high and was living on borrowed time, the age of three score years and ten having been passed. What a benediction her life was to her church and town. She was held up by saint and sinner as a model Christian. Her sweet face shall not be seen among us any more, not those petitions heard from her which touched our hearts and drew us so near to the Father's throne, but her Christian influence will live on for ages. Who would not covet to live such a life?
