John Mills lived in Washington County, Pennsylvania and served as a Private in the Revolutionary War as a Pennsylvania Frontier Ranger with Captain Benjamin Stites. Also serving were Amos and Ziba Leonard. Mills married Rachel Leonard and arrived in Knox County, Ohio[1] around 1805 along with William Leonard, Leonard's sons Amos and Ziba, and around eight other families.
In Knox County, Mills became a justice of the peace in 1806 and associate judge from 1808-1814. He served as a grand juror in 1814 and in 1815 was elected as a judge of newly-formed Jackson Township, which includes Bladensburg, Ohio.
[The DAR file for John Mills (Patriot A079961) provides the name of his wife, Rachel Leonard. William Leonard's will of 1806 mentions a daughter, Rachel and was witnessed by John Mills. Shirley Evans concluded that the witness Mills was also the Patriot Mills who was known to have died in Ohio around 1829.]
