PORTLAND -- Mildred 'Tee' Caleb Howell died peacefully in her sleep on June 26, 2014 at her home in Portland. Born on Walnut Street, she was the daughter of Royal and Mildred (Bennett) Caleb. She grew up on Munjoy Hill and attended Portland Schools. She graduated from Portland High School in 1947 where she was a 5 sport athlete and took part in her Senior Class play, the Mikado. She was a past worthy advisor of the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls. She worked for The Portland Press Herald until her marriage to her childhood sweetheart Elton T. Howell in 1949. Together they raised three children. She was a member of St Ansgar and First Lutheran Church in Portland and spent a number of years in the choir. She had a talented singing voice and love for music, which she instilled in her children and grandchildren. After sending her children off to school she worked for the Portland Public Schools Department as a teacher's aide and media resource person at West, Longfellow and Reiche Schools. She retired in 1989 but continued to work part-time in customer service with Porteous and then Filene's at the Mall. She had an adventurous spirit and enjoyed her travels in Europe and throughout the US. She also enjoyed taking her grandchildren on her trips to Florida. She was always there for her children and grandchildren with her constant smile and 'what can I do to help' attitude. She was a constant at her grandchildren's sports and activities. They could always count on her being in the stands or audience cheering them on. Tee made many wonderful and dear friends, and will be greatly missed. She was predeceased by her parents and husband. She is survived by her three children, Thomas Howell, Suzanne McIver, her husband Michael and Steven and Heidi Howell all of Portland; her grandchildren, Jefferson and wife Shannon Howell of Winooski, Vt., Rebecca Howell of Hermosa Beach, Calif., Courtney (McIver) and husband Philip Turbe of Manchester, NH, Elizabeth McIver, Andrew McIver, Brett Howell, and Ryan Howell of Portland; her great-grandchildren, Riley and Samuel Turbe, Ophelia Howell and a sister Lois Barter of Falmouth; and many nieces and nephews. Friends and relatives are invited to attend a time of visitation on Tuesday July 1, 2014 from 1 to 3 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home 199 Woodford Street Portland, Maine. Funeral Services will be held at the First Lutheran Church 132 Auburn St. Portland, Maine on Wednesday July 2, 2014 at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Portland.
