The son of Clyde A. Phillips Sr and Annetta E. Phillips of Bucklin KA, Marlin re-enlisted in the US Marine Corps on May 8, 1967 in Honolulu HI and arrived in Vietnam on July 2, 1967 where he was assigned to Company K, 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

On August 27 1968, the Battalion and Company CP on Hill 37 was hit with a barrage of enemy mortar fire. Several men were wounded including Cpl Phillips. He was evacuated to the NSA Station Hospital in DaNang where he died of multiple fragmentation wounds on September 6, 1968
