Bailey of the county of Charlotte in this state volunteered in the Cavalry Service at the commencement of the war and remained until discharged for disability. He has recently been examined by a medical board as I am informed and found fit for "Cavalry Service". This finding is not sanctioned by existing orders but the Doctor is anxious to be placed where he can be useful, and therefore he is unwilling to wait until the final decision of his application for detail. The Doctor has been highly recommended to me by a friend upon whose statements I rely implicitly, as a successful practitioner of medicine for the last six years. He has shown me a letter to you from the Surgeon in Charge at Staunton River Bridge asking that he may [be] assigned to him for duty as Hospital Steward. If the application is made for a detail for this purpose by you it will of course receive the most respectful consideration, but I would be gratified if the opportunity for greater usefulness and distinction were allowed the Doctor, and with that view respectfully submit that he be permitted to appear before the Board of Examiners for appointment as Assistant Surgeon. I have the honor to be, Very Respectfully yours, T. P. August, Col. & Acting Supt." [Docketing on the back of this letter reads, "S.G.O., Aug. 10/64. Res. referred to Brig. Genl.
