William C. Bond, Former Champion Half-Mile Runner, Dies

William Coe Bond, who in his younger days was known as the champion half-mile runner in the state, died at the home of his son, Harry Bond, 345 West Lake Street, Sunday morning of bladder and other ailments after being confined to his bed one month. He had been in poor health for the past four months but kept at his work as a plater at the factory of Winsted Hardware Mfg. Co. until four weeks ago when he was forced to give up his labor. He became unconscious early Saturday morning and the end came peacefully.
Mr. Bond was born in Wales, Massachusetts, son of Sylvester and Sarah (Avery) Bond and came to Winsted when quite young and had made his home here ever since. His father was one of the old stagedrivers between Hartford and Albany, NY. Mr. Bond by trade was a scythe-maker and was employed by all the local scythe manufacturing companies. He was active in military affairs, being a member if the old Steele guards and was an original member of Hose Co. 1 Winsted fire department and a member of its crack running team. He won many medals as a runner in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York state in the early 70's. Like all members of the Bond family, he was a musician and one of the best harmonica players in this part of the country.
Besides his wife, and son, Harry, he leaves a daughter, Mrs. Vernon Provost of Torrington, seven brothers, Frank S., Fred H, Edwin C., George, all of Winsted, Wilbur of Albany, NY, Charles of North Adams, Massachusetts, and Fritz H. of New Haven. and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at the home of his son, Harry, tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. R. V. K. Harris officiating. Burial will be in Forest View Cemetery. The Knights of Pythias, of which Mr. Bond was a member will have charge of the services.
