He was a grand-nephew of Queen Victoria, and married Victoria's granddaughter, Princess Alexandra daughter of The Prince Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Duke of Edinburgh and Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia on 20 April 1896 at Coburg .
He was Regent of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha from 30 July 1900 to 18 July 1905 on behalf of Carl Eduard von Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha, who was not of age yet,
After Hitler took power in Germany, the prince joined the Nazi Party joined the Nazi Party in 1936. He retreated into private life after the Second World War, and died on 11 December 1950 at age 87 at Langenburg. His children were descended from Queen Victoria of Great Britain and Tsar Alexander II of Russia
