Rudolph's father John immigrated to the United States from Saxony, Germany and settled at Scales Mound, Illinois in 1852 buying land owned by the railroad 15 to 20 miles wide. His land "rolled into the bottom land of a creek in a hidden valley fifteen miles from Galena and three miles from Scales Mound." They were among several Mennonite families who settled there and formed a community.

Rudolph married Louisa E Musselman February 14, 1879. They lived on the 160 acre home farm of his parents, with their children and his mother. In May of 1886 many of Rudolph's crops in the lowlands were ruined by a great flood. He had recently purchased another 200 acre farm and was counting on the crops to help pay his debts that he owed his mother and several others in the community. Rudolph became depressed because of the lost funds over the crops. In a period of despondency he hung himself from the rafters of the granary. His 80 year old mother found him when he had not come home for dinner and she went to searching for him. His age was 42 years and 28 days.

When Rudolph died he left seven children for Louisa to raise, five being minors. With the sale of the other farm, other supplies and equipment, Louisa was able to keep the family farm with the help of her children until she purchased a home for herself at Scales Mound in 1908. She was a strong and resourceful woman.
