Sanford Morse enlisted as a Private in Company B of the Fourth Michigan Volunteer Infantry on June 20, 1861, for 3 years service. He was wounded in action and taken prisoner at Malvern Hill, Virginia, on June 27, 1862. Sanford returned to the regiment on August 20, 1862 and re-enlisted on December 29, 1863. He was on detached service with Company A of the First Michigan Infantry, by order, July 2, 1864, Petersburg, Virginia and later transferred to Company C of the Reorganized Fourth Michigan Infantry on July 1, 1865. Sanford mustered out of service on February 26, 1866 at San Antonio, Texas.
