LSgt Burgan and Maj Matthew Collins were killed by an improvised explosive device after returning from an operation in support of Afghan National Army soldiers, alongside C Company of the Danish Battle Group, in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province. They were due to return home in six days.
Aged 28, LSgt Burgan was from Liverpool and joined the battalion in 1999. He served on Operations in Northern Ireland, Iraq, and Afghanistan and gained promotions within the signals platoon to become a Signals Detachment Commander. His professional knowledge and dedication were his hallmarks and his commanding officer had said he, "Knows what has to be done, does it brilliantly and has the next thing ready before you ask".
LSgt Burgan leaves behind his wife Leanne, parents Terry and Rita, sisters Laura, Kate and Jayne, along with other relatives and friends. He is now reunited with son Archie, born asleep on July 7, 2009.
A repatriation ceremony was held at RAF Lyneham on March 29, 2011. That evening, some 2,000 people gathered at Wignall Park, Kirkby to release Chinese lanterns skyward in tribute to LSgt Burgan.
Funeral with full military honours was held on April 13, 2011 at Holy Name Roman Catholic Church in Fazakerley.
