She was murdered, thrown from a rumble seat of a car (backseat) around Lake Del Worth, Dallas, Texas. Her parents weren't notified. The man whom murdered her later found dead in that lake. This information from sister Nita Lewis Toland & niece Wanda Parisher. According to death certificate she sustained a skull fracture.

According to Essie Estelle Lewis Short's death certificate, her DOD was April 15, 1930 and she was buried in the Old Oak Cliff Cemetery on April 18, 1930. It states that she died form a Fracture to the base of the skull. It is signed by LM Lewis (Jack).
