Mr. Wheeler participated in numerous engagements in Missouri and Kansas, including actions at Lexington, Big Blue, Independence, State Line, Westport, Mine Creek, Little Osage River, Marias des Cygnes, and the Marmiton. According to his obituary he was "many years a suffer, having contracted an affliction in the service of his country from which he was never relieved until the angel of death came to take him to his rest. He was true alike to his church, his country, his family and his God." (Paul Grisham, San Antonio, Tx)
