Both Churchwell's family and Charlotte's family were from Grayson County, Virginia originally. The Morris family moved to Highland County, Ohio and the Alderman family stayed in Virginia. The Morris family were Quakers and Churchwell's father was a Methodist preacher. After Churchwell's father died in 1859, Churchwell joined the Confederate Army of Virginia in May of 1862 to fight in Company G, 63rd Virginia Army. He supposedly deserted on or about August 23, 1863. This was actually a huge twist of fate - because his regiment would fight at Chickamauga in one of the deadliest battles of the Civil War less than a month later. After he deserted, I believe Churchwell went up to Highland County, Ohio to stay with the Morris family. I have no proof of that, but it makes sense as he was living in Highland County in 1863. (He told the draft registration people that he was born in Indiana to protect himself). In Nov. 1865 (after the war ended) he married Charlotte Morris. They ended up moving back to Virginia where Charlotte died in 1905. I am not sure how or why Churchwell ended up dying in Texas, so that remains a mystery to me. He was the father of at least six children including: Virginia, Amanda, William, Ellis, Walter and Minnie Alderman.

In 1860 when he was 24, Churchwell had gone to Collin County Texas along with his sisters. Judith Alderman Huff Cameron, and Lucy Jane Alderman Utt, and their families. In 1862 he returned to Virginia and jointed the Confederacy at Camp Jackson. In 1899 he died and was buried in Farmersville, Collin County, TX while visiting his sister Lucy Jane Utt.
The Alderman family is a large one. While many members have stayed in Virginia, many of them migrated to Highland County, Ohio, Missouri, Nebraska and Texas. Churchill traveled to Collin County, Texas with his sister and brother-in-law, Judith Ann Alderman and Nathaniel Huff, somewhere between 1855 and 1860. Nathaniel was killed in the Civil War in 1863 and Judith remarried another widower, Daniel Cameron, also with children. There were other Alderman family members living in Texas at that time including my gg grandfather. Churchill most likely was visiting his sister and her family in Texas when he died in 1899. To this day we have family members in Texas.
