OGDEN – Frank LaVon Allred, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, passed away Monday, March 14, 2011 of causes incident to age. Frank was born in Ogden, Utah, on April 19, 1921, to LaVon Tracy Allred and Lola Kate Bair. He was the older brother of Barbara Allred Berry, of Troutdale, Oregon and Gary Allred, of Hurley, New York.
Frank was a happy child. When he was quite small, his mother would dress him up in a little sailor suit and have him sing. From the time he was quite young, his father took him hunting and fishing. He played basketball, baseball, and football. He enjoyed riding up Ogden Canyon with his family for picnics. Frank learned to work hard when he was young. During school, he worked for the Model Dairy and Farr's Ice Cream.
Frank attended Ogden City Schools and graduated from Ogden High School. He was a very good student. History was his favorite subject. Frank had a lot of friends and he enjoyed sports and school parties. His college education was cut short when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps at age 20. He became a B-17 pilot, serving in the European theater during WWII. He flew 29 bombing missions and earned two Distinguished Flying Crosses and the Purple Heart, among other commendations.
Frank met his wife, Mary "Missy" Souther, when he was stationed in Florida. They were married April 12, 1946. They had three children: Gregg (Tina) Allred of Eden, UT; Vicki (Kim) Covieo of Kaysville, UT; and Lori (Monte) Montgomery of Fruit Heights, UT. They also have 12 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
After Frank and Missy were married, they came back to Utah where Frank worked for Shepherd's Auto Parts and the Wood Motor Cadillac-Oldsmobile dealership. In 1961, Frank started Allco Auto Parts. His business grew until he owned six stores before he retired. He also ran the State and City Impound Lot and owned two private clubs: The Galleon and Sebastians.
Frank was a life-long resident of Utah. He and Missy owned homes in Ogden, Eden, South Ogden and a winter home in Mesquite, Nevada. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, snowmobiling and traveling to many parts of the world with his "best friend, pal and wife", Missy. He was a member of the Jaycee's, the Elks, the Footprinters, and organized the Weber County Sheriff's Jeep Patrol with Wib Cook and several other friends, through which they saved many lives.
Frank valued family, honesty, respect and true friends. He was kind, patient and generous. He was a great example to his friends and family and taught them many life lessons. One of his favorite memories was spending time at Lake Powell, in a houseboat, with his family.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sister and brother.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 18 at 2 p.m. at Lindquist's Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.
Family will visit with friends at the mortuary on Thursday evening March 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m.
