Overall Civil War service spanned the dates 23 Dec 1861 to 2 Aug 1865.

Originally enlisted on 23 Dec 1861 as a married man, Tanner by trade, standing 5'10", blue eyes & light hair. He mustered into Co. C, 13th Infantry; Maine Vols. on 31 Dec 1861, at Augusta, Me. He would also be assigned to Co. G, then back to Co. C during this time.

While with the 13th, he reenlisted as a Veteran Volunteer on 1 Feb 1864. The 13th Regiment was mustered out of service on 6 Jan 1865. On or about 1 Jan 1865, Augustus was among the many reenlisted & fresh recruits of the 13th that were reassigned to Company K, 30th Regiment, Me Vols. He would remain in this unit until mustered out on 2 Aug 1865.

P.O.W. - On 9 Apr 1864, while still with the 13th Regiment, Augustus was taken POW at the Battle of Pleasant Hill, part of the Red River Campaign in Louisiana. His Civil War Profile does not mention when, but does say he was "exchanged". He spent some time at Cony Hospital, Augusta. The 1890 Veteran Census mentions he was then debilitated by Typhoid Fever. On 15 Aug 1865 he applied for and apparently received an invalid pension.
