Edward Lane was a well known carriage maker, Edward Lane & Co., in the city of Philadelphia. Source: The U.S. Census records list him as a carriage or coach maker as does his death certificate. His brother Davis Morton Lane (Memorial No. 80024564) also had a carriage building business with his sons called D.M.Lane & Sons.
In the year 1865 edward was granted a patent by the 39th Congress, House of Representatives, Ex. Doc. No. 52, Volume II as listed in their Annual Report of the Commissioner Of Patents For The Year 1865.
"(Page 925 - No. 51,196) - EDWARD LANE, Philadelphia, Penn. --Carriage -- November 28, 1865. To the underside and toward the front of the body are secured two hangers, and towards the rear of the body and to its under side are secured two similar hangers. To each pair of hangers is attached a pair of levers, connected by rods. To staples, on the underside of the carriage seat, are suspended four gum elastic springs, each spring being connected with one of the levers by a rod. The object of the arrangement is to render the whole structure firm, capable of bearing a comparatively heavy weight, and susceptible of an undulating motion.
(Claim).--
The body A, its four springs, the levers D'D', connected directly to the crosspiece E, and levers D'D' connected to the rear axle through the medium of links F'F', when the whole is arranged and operated as set forth, and is applied to a carriage in which the said cross-piece E is connected by a perch G to the rear axle, as specified."

His three grand daughters Carolyn Virginia Lord seven months old (daughter of Elizabeth (Lane) Lord and William Rufus Bicklen Lord) and Edith O. Lane eight years old (daughter of Edward Lane and Lula (Pennock) Lane) and Alverda Hartley still born infant of Alverda (Lane) Hartley and Francis W. Hartley are also buried in this family lot of graves.
Edward's death certificate from the City of Philadelphia lists his age as fifty eight years, married, Coach Builder, with date of burial January 10, 1871, Mt. Moriah Cemetery. I have not been able to find out where his first wife Catharine is buried. His second wife Laura is buried in his family plot under the last name of Garner whom she married as her second husband after Edward died. No children were born of this second marriage.
His Mortuary Notice was in the Philadelphia Inquirer of 9 January 1871.
