John R. Sawyer was the youngest son of Daniel "Ned" and Grace Sawyer. He had a sister Margaret and brother Daniel. John enlisted in the Army Air Corp on March 27, 1942. He was killed in action over the Island of Truk on June 2, 1944 and is buried at the U.S. Military Cemetery in Manila, Phillippines. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Air Medal and additional Army Awards. Married Elsie von der Lippen on May 22, 1943 in Tucson, Arizona.
