Chester Campbell Alexander of Elgin Funeral services for Chester Campbell Alexander, 89, formerly of McLean, Ill., will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, in the First Christian Church, 1125 Summit St., Elgin. Burial will follow in Bluff City Cemetery, Elgin. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, at the church. Born March 11, 1916, in McLean, the son of Edward and Pearl Alexander, he passed away Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2006. Chester had worked as a teacher in School District U-46 at Elgin High School from 1942 until going into the Navy in 1943. He served in the Navy During World War II. Chet returned to Elgin High School as a teacher/ coach in 1946. In 1951, he was named the new principal at Larsen Junior High School. He then became principal of Elgin High School in 1955, a position he held until his retirement in 1974. He retired from education in 1974, and a retirement dinner attended by over 800 people celebrated his educational career and contributions to the community. Chester positively impacted the lives of many students, though his compassionate and caring ways. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Elgin and the Elk's Club of Elgin #737. He served several local organizations including Elgin Lions Club, United Way, Kairos Family Center and the Salvation Army. Survivors include his children, Marcia Ogden of North Manchester, Ind., Sharon (Scott) Rexinger of Scottsdale, Ariz. and Craig (Cindy) Alexander of McLean; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marcella on April 10, 1994, whom he married on Dec. 25, 1938; and his brother, Ralph Alexander. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, Boys & Girls Club of Elgin, or the charity of one's choice. For information, 847-741-8800.
