Jacob was the son of Jacob Watson II and Mary Pugh. He was born in Pulaski Co., but spent a number of years in Clinch Co., where he married Sibbie Gertrude Willcox on Feb. 9, 1862 in Stockton. He also spent some time in FL. He served in the Civil War (Co. C, 4th Georgia Regiment) and was injured in the Battle of Atlanta. In 1866, he and Sibbie moved to Thomasville so he could take the bar and become a lawyer. He later returned to Hawkinsville where he served as mayor in 1872.
