Illinois Governor. Relocating to Illinois in 1822, he became the very first person to build a cabin and live in the Military Tract area. He also was influential in the formation of Adams County and was successful in the development of the real-estate there. Entering politics, he was the Quincy Town Trustee (1834-39), Mayor of Quincy (1844-48, 52-53, 56) and a member of Illinois Senate (1850-54). He also was the 13th Illinois Lieutenant Governor (1857-60) and when Governor William H. Bissell passed away in 1860, Wood assumed the duties as a Republican the 12th Illinois Governor, serving until 1861. During his short term, the investigation of the Illinois and Michigan canal scrip fraud continued and the Illinois Militia was reorganized. After leaving office, he was appointed Quartermaster-General of Illinois and served as Colonel of the 137th Illinois Volunteers, Union Army, during the Civil War. After the war, he returned to his real-estate interests in Adams County. The John Wood Community College in Quincy, Illinois, is named in his honor.
