Arthur W. Newell was the President of the Fourth National Bank of Boston. He died in the sinking of the RMS Titanic on April 15, 1912. With characteristic fortitude, he met the fateful issue for himself after assuring the safety of his two daughters who escaped in a lifeboat. His body was recovered following the disaster and was returned to his home in Lexington where funeral services were held. He was buried at Mount Auburn on May 4, 1912.
