A Troop joined this fight in the afternoon. There were lots of open rice paddys with some very thick hedge rows ahead of us when we went online. D Troop gun teams had one area covered and air force jets would drop napalm on the hedge rows and you could see NVA running across the fields to another hedge row. Suddenly I saw one of the jets take fire and smoke coming from his wing and then a gunship was hit and went straight down between us and the hedge rows. We moved out and were taking volleys of RPG's and small arms fire until we got close to the chopper. Sgt Brown then moved his tank between the chopper and the hedge rows and got the crew on board and we started backing out. It was one of the bravest things I ever saw. We got back almost to our starting point and Sgt Brown was shot in the head and Williame Conley got hit by an RPG.
