Mrs. Cumbie was one of ten children born to David and Anna Finney Gamble. David and Anna had been married in Laurensville, South Carolina on March 16, 1814. Her father was a Sargeant in the South Carolina Militia, War of 1812. He served under Andrew Jackson in the Florida Campaign and at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend (Alabama). Her siblings were: Thomas; Robert; Samuel; John Henry; Nathan; Catherine (Young); Mary (Bennett); Martha Lucinda (Jackson) and Sarah (Johnson). She was married to Charles Cumbie in 1845. At 56 years of age, she and her husband and many members of her immediate and extended family, moved from Randolph County Alabama to Sebastian County Arkansas. This was accomplished via river boat. They landed at Hackett City, Arkansas (Arkansas River) in 1880. She and her husband had eight children: Anderson David, John William, William Millard, Sarah Anne, Rufus Charles, Rilla Valentine, Henry Shelton and Nathan Gamble.
