Richard A. Filla, 96, Washington, passed away Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011.

Mr. Filla was born Aug. 9, 1914, in Washington to Andrew E. Filla and wife Pauline, nee Kluba.

He received his education at St. Francis Borgia Grade School and was a member of St. Francis Borgia Church.

His employment was with International Shoe, Deb Shoe and Washington Metal Fabricators.

Mr. Filla had many avocations. He was an accomplished pilot, woodworker and furniture maker, leaving many beautiful pieces of furniture for his family to cherish.

He loved the outdoors, was an expert marksman, enjoyed traveling and reading, especially history and geography. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Mr. Filla served his country in the U.S. Army, receiving an honorable discharge Sept. 15, 1945.

He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and European, African and Middle-Eastern Theater Medal. He was a member of DAV, Disabled American Veterans.

On Aug. 15, 1942, he was united in marriage to Gertrude Aholt at St. Francis Borgia Church.

This union was blessed with two sons and three daughters. On Aug. 15, 2010, Richard and Gertrude and their family were able to celebrate their 68th wedding anniversary.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter-in-law, Donna Filla; eight brothers, Alois Filla, Elmer Filla, Robert Filla, Benny Filla, Norbert Filla, Maurice Filla, Anthony Filla and Leander Filla; and two sisters, Virginia Shipman and Alma Peters.

Mr. Filla is survived by his beloved wife, Gertrude Filla, nee Aholt, Washington; two sons, Timothy Filla and Benjamin Filla and wife Marilyn, all of Washington; three daughters, Christine Dothage, LaBarque Creek, Bethine Spaunhorst and husband Vernon, Washington, and Jennifer Hilgard and husband James, Godfrey, Ill.; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; cousins; other relatives and many friends.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Monday, Feb. 14, at St. Francis Borgia Church, Washington, with the Rev. John Mayo, celebrant.

Interment was in the church cemetery.

Memorials to St. Francis Borgia Grade School, Center for Hearing and Speech or Masses are preferred.

The Filla family was served by Nieburg-Vitt Funeral Home, Washington.
