Hooper Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. Burial will be in Smellage Memory Gardens on Hopewell Rd. The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. on Tues., March 1, at the funeral home.
Mr. Billings died on Sun., Feb. 27, 2005, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Swope Rd. in Carthage.
He was born on Sept. 17, 1983, in Cookeville to Carl Wayne and Jodi Lynn Jernigan Kirby of South Carthage. Mr. Billings was a cook at Waffle House.
In addition to his parents, his family includes his fiancée, Kim Swicegood and her sons, Caleb and Hunter,
of South Carthage; a son, Anthony Rodger Billings Jr. of South Carthage; four sisters, Iris Jo Dyer of Cookeville, Virginia Kirby Wood of South Carolina, Amy Fulghum of Lancaster, and Cindy Phillips of Buffalo Valley; five brothers, Christopher Billings of Easley, SC, Walter Dean Stafford of Cookeville, Eddie Wayne Davis of South Carthage, Carl Wayne Davis of Detroit, Mich., and Christopher Gene Kirby of Sparta; maternal grandparents, Bill and Iris Jernigan of Silver Point; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Jess and Claudia Kirby.
The Smith County accident happened just after 3 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, on Swope Road, according to a report by THP Trooper Shannon Brinkley.
Anthony R. Billings was driving a 1991 Toyota Tercel north on Swope Road. Tommy Lee Gooch was riding in the front passenger seat, and Jimmy Calvin Bane was riding in the right of the back seat, the report says.
Behind the Toyota car was a 2004 Dodge pickup. Michael W. Kemp, 43, of Old Sanders Creek Road, Carthage, was the driver.
According to Trooper Brinkley, Kemp was chasing the car and his truck struck it in the rear.
Billings lost control of the car, which ran off the shoulder of the road and struck a tree, the impact of which was in the driver's side door. The car came to rest in a creek, and the driver was ejected, the report says. The driver and both passengers were killed. Kemp, the driver of the pickup, was not injured.
Neither Kemp nor the three in the car were using seat belts, but in the opinion of the trooper, use of safety belts probably would have made no difference in the outcome.
Trooper Brinkley notes on the report that no drinking was involved in the crash, but investigation continues.
The report does not indicate the motive for the chase.
