Interment
Kochville Methodist Church Cemetery
Kochville, MI

Clara was born September 3, 1910, to George and Theresa Schwarz Marti in Saginaw, Michigan. In 1917 her father purchased a farm and they moved to the country where she attended a one-room school. In 1926 she graduated from Arthur Hill High School. Winning the four-year John Moore scholarship to the University of Michigan was a great joy to her parents, for it meant she was to have a good education with little expense to the family. Clara graduated from the University of Michigan in 1930 (at the age of 20), with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education. She was fortunate to obtain a job in Saginaw teaching sixth grade. On December 24, 1937, she married Cloyce F. Dean and had to give up her teaching position due to the Great Depression, when the school would employ only men or single women. For many years Clara was a busy housewife and mother. She enjoyed her children and was proud that all three graduated from the University of Michigan. She was active in church activities, bridge club, the University of Michigan Alumnae Association and the Saginaw Genealogical Society. She self-published several booklets of family history and distributed them to family and libraries. She enjoyed travel and visited relatives in Germany and Switzerland.

Cloyce died in 1983 and in 1985 she married Lloyd J. Cartwright, a long time family friend. They shared a love of travel and took trips to Hawaii, Alaska, Great Britain, and the Caribbean. They sailed through the Panama Canal. Winters were spent in Florida and summers at Lloyd's Michigan home on the shores of Lake Huron.

With Lloyd's death in 1997, Clara established her home in Florida, where she stayed until January 2008. At that point, she moved to Sunnymere Retirement Home in Aurora, Illinois. She continued to enjoy life there, keeping up correspondence with many friends and family, reading the daily newspaper, and following the news of the world. She especially looked forward to visits from her family, many of whom came to help her celebrate her 100th birthday.

In February 2012, after a brief hospitalization, Clara moved to Jennings Terrace, where she lived until her death on January 18, 2016. She passed away very peacefully at 1:25 PM that day, over 105 years old. She will finally join Cloyce at the Kochville Methodist Church cemetery. Family services will be held there in the spring.

Survivors include her three children: James E. Dean, Nancy Dean Sadik, and Jane Dean Zimmerman, five grandchildren, Kelsey Dean, Emily Sadik, Jeffrey Sadik, Rachel Gustafson and Dean Zimmerman, and five great-grandchildren, Claire, Luke and Grace Gustafson and Jacob and Jon Zimmerman.
