IRWIN, JR. WILLIAM WALTER A resident of Baton Rouge, he died at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at Baton Rouge General Medical Center-Mid City. He was 80 and a native of New Orleans.

He was a 1942 graduate of Holy Cross High School in New Orleans. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II, where he served in the North Atlantic aboard the escort carrier USS Guadalcanal CVE-60.

He received the Presidential Unit Citation for his part in the heroic capture of the German submarine U-505, now on display in the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry.

Upon return to civilian life in 1946, Mr. Irwin earned a law degree from Loyola University.

After several years of practice, he moved to Baton Rouge, and in 1963 began his career in state government as a trial attorney with the former Department of Highways, specializing in Eminent Domain litigation. In 1974, he was named Deputy General Counsel of the Department of Transportation and Development. He retired from DOTD in January 1994 after 31 years of service.

In addition to customary church and school activities, his lifetime of community service radiates from the deepest patriotism and devotion to his country.

He was an active member of the VFW and American Legion for more than 40 years and a charter member of the USS Kidd Navy Club.

He is survived by his wife, Dolores Mut Irwin of Baton Rouge;
a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis Michael and Annie Patrimonio Irwin of San Diego; and granddaughter, Heather Marie Irwin of San Diego.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Walter Sr. and Amelia Becker Irwin; and a brother, Henry Irwin.

He was of the Catholic faith.

Services performed under the direction of Seale Funeral Service Inc., Denham Springs.
