Elizabeth Altmeyer immigrated to the United States with her parents. They arrived at New Orleans in 1845, when she was six years old. The family fist settled in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee where she met and married her first husband, Peter Beckenbach, on October 16, 1859. Shortly afterwards, she and her husband and parents all moved to Columbia, Maury County, Tennessee. Here her seven children were born, six sons and one daughter. Her husband, Peter, died in 1878 and she married Charles Thompson March 29, 1880. The Thompsons and her children then moved to Paducah, Kentucky. It is unknown what happened to Mr. Thompson. Family lore says that Mr. Thompson was abusive and that Elizabeth's sons and he went fishing one day. The sons came back but Mr. Thompson did not. What might have happened on this possibly mythical fishing trip is unknown but we do know her sons, Peter and Charlie, moved to Texas in the early 1890s. Perhaps she moved with them or perhaps she followed later but it appears she spent her last years in Tyler, Smith County, Texas.
