Valerie M. Lahaie, 96, of South Portland, a longtime resident of Sanford, died at the Seaside Rehab and Healthcare Center in Portland after a short illness.

She was born in Barachois, Quebec, Canada, a daughter of Godfrey and Euphemie (Legere) Legere and attended schools in Canada and Sanford.

She was employed for 43 years by Universal Shoe retiring in 1975. Valerie moved back to Canada when she married Adelard Lahaie in 1982, returning to Maine after his death, living in Springvale until 2002. She moved to the Betsy Ross House in South Portland where she made many friends.

Survivors include her son Paul Roy and his wife Rita of Windsor Locks, CT, her daughter Lynda Carson of Scarborough, granddaughter Suzanne Michalewicz and her husband John, grandson Dennis Roy and his wife Colleen, great grandchildren Steven Michalewicz, Jessica Michalewicz, Nicholas Roy and Patrick Roy. She is also survived by the children of her late twin sister Urseline with whom she had a special relationship, Terry Kronenberger and Alban Boutin and their spouses. Valerie also leaves behind her "adopted" granddaughter Kari Robinson, her husband Herb and their children Alek, Brenden and Chase of So. Portland.

Interment at Saint Ignatius Cemetery in Sanford.
