Ira worked for the Union Pacific RR for 32 years. Due to poor health, he resigned his position with the RR on July 1,1938 and headed for California. He and wife, Mildred had only been in Monterey County about 7 weeks when they were killed in an automobile accident. The accident occurred when a truck crashed into the car Ira was driving. Mildred and young daughter Bernadine, were in the vehicle. Just prior to the collision, Bernie remembered her father saying "Look at him take all the road!" He attempted to pull out of the way of the truck as quickly as possible. Ira was killed instantly. The accident happened on Friday, Nov 18, 1938 at 2:30 p.m. in E. Salinas, California. Millie, his wife died at the hospital about 6 hours later. Bernadine survived the crash. Their youngest son, Carl (age 12), remembers his father drove a 1932 black Chevrolet.
