Laura May RUBEY LEU, 86 of Washington, Iowa, formerly of Fairfield, died December 4, 2008 at the Presbyterian Home in Washington, Iowa.

A funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church ELCA in Fairfield with Rev. Marvin Robeck officiating. Interment will follow in Forrest Home Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.

Family visitation will be from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday at Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church, the Presbyterian Home Activity Fund in Washington or to the University of Iowa Cancer Center.

Mrs. LEU was born June 30, 1922 in Jefferson County, the daughter of Charles and Ella Anna TRAIL RUBEY. She married Roy Gordon LEU June 6, 1943, at the First Lutheran Parsonage in Fairfield with the Rev. E.A. Piper officiating.

Mrs. LEU taught rural school for six years, first at Round Prairie #6, then at Blackhawk #8 and finally at Buchanan #4. She later worked for 12 years at Harrison's Variety Store in Fairfield. She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Fairfield and the Women of the ELCA Esther Group. She and her husband Roy farmed south of Fairfield for 27 years and for many of those years she was a member of the "Lend-a-Hand Neighborhood Club." She loved sewing and crocheting made many lap blankets for friends and loved ones and she was known as the "birthday card lady" by all her friends and the members of First Lutheran Church because she sent cards to them all for over 10 years. She was pen pals with Singer/Actress Lena Horne who shared her birthday. She moved into the Presbyterian Home in Washington in 2001.

She is survived by her daughter: Donna Jean (LEU) HAGERMAN of Tama, Iowa and her son Greg Joe LEU and his wife Linda of Iowa City, Iowa; 11 grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren. 2 sisters Eloise NORTON of Fairfield and Emma Lillian KURTZ of Iowa City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Roy; 2 sons Gary Eugene and Kreg Leo; 3 brothers Carrol, Henry, and Charles Jr., and 2 sisters Enola RICHARDSON and Elsie Marie NEECE.
