Margaret Virginia Spence Halstead, 81, affectionately known as Nana and Grandma by her grandchildren, of the 3000 block of Scotia Drive, went to be with the Lord Feb. 5, 2002, in Norfolk.
Born in Elizabeth City, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Joseph F. and Ruth Waller Spence and was the widow of Edward W. Halstead. She was a lifetime member of Virginia Heights Baptist Church and often recited Hebrews 13:5, "I will never leave thee nor forsake thee."
Mrs. Halstead is survived by a son, E. Leonard Halstead and wife Joyce of Virginia Beach; a daughter, Linda M. Halstead of Raleigh, N.C.; five grandchildren, Trevor G. Halstead of Virginia Beach, Lisa M. Halstead of Dublin, Va., Kristin L. Bell of Raleigh, N.C., Meredith B. Myers and husband Jonathan of Huntersville, N.C., and Kevin H. Bell of Raleigh; a brother, J.F. Spence Jr.; eight sisters, Gladys Stewart and husband Lewis, Annie Overstreet, Doris Spence, Helen Stallings, Marion Mathias and husband Dick, Mary Jane Rich and husband Jimmy, Joyce Burkett, Norma Wassman and husband Woody; as well as beloved nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Virginia Heights Baptist Church, 1251 Kempsville Road, by Dr. Jerry Vintinner and the Rev. Linwood Peterson. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
The viewing will begin today with the family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m. at Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge. Memorial donations may be made to Fibromyalgia Alliance of America, Inc., P.O. Box 21990, Columbus, OH 43221.
