Joseph was a carpenter, and the son of Gabriel and Elizabeth Long Guyer. The family came to Wood County from Pennsylvania in 1832 making the journey by ox teams and camping along the roadside at night. There were nine children in the family: Gabriel, Susan (George Adelman), Polly (Levi Bartell), Daniel, John, Emanuel (all of Weston), and Washington (of Toledo). Joseph married Elizabeth Swarm on Christmas Day 1851 in Wood County, and they had Marion (1853), Agnes (1854)(Lashley), Francis (1859), Twins (1857-1857), and Jay Sherman (1865).
