U.S. Congressman. Successful in the in the manufacture of iron, he studied law, was admitted to the New York bar in 1847 and commenced to practice law in Watertown, New York, until 1853. He was president of the Town of Watertown, in 1866 and supervisor of the town, (1865-68). In 1875, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-fourth and Forty-fifth Congresses, serving until 1879. After his term, he resumed and managed his iron works until his death at age 88.
