Death followed a week's illness from pneumonia. It was only during the 24 hours preceding his death that his condition was critical and that death was looked forward to.
He was born, April 22, 1847, on the old Stoner homestead, south of town, the son of Andrew Stoner. He lived there until his marriage to Elizabeth Berger when he moved to Waynesboro and engaged in the grocery business in the room on East Main street, now occupied by furniture store of F. E. Grove.
Later he moved to Nunnery where he engaged in fruit growing.
Fifteen years ago he came back to Waynesboro and for three years engaged in the livery and ice business. For the past twelve years he had been employed as a woodworker in the wood department of the Geiser shops.
He was a member of the Church of the Brethren, having joined the church forty-seven years ago.
Mr. Stoner was a man of the highest rectitude and was esteemed by all who knew him for his good qualities and for his kindliness of manner and his helpfulness of disposition.
He is survived by his widow and these children: Mrs. H. R. Smith, West Fourth street; John B. Stoner, Mullies Hill, N. J., and Joseph Stoner, at home.
He is survived, also, by one sister, Mrs. Daniel Benedict, Pigeon Hill, Quincy township, and one brother, David A. Stoner, south of town.
