Alta was b. on a farm just NE/o Harlan in Jackson Twp, Shelby Co., IA, the dau./o Simeon Grant & Lucy Atwood PRUITT Heflin.
Alta remained @ home until both par.s passed away. Sometime bet. 1910 & 1915, Alta became employed by the local telephone company. She remained there for several years.
Alta & her mom stated that they both had only an 8th Grade education. Girls, usually, did better with attending school as the boys had to help on the farm.
Alta's pa d. in 1910, and Alta and her mom remained in/nr Harlan in rented homes. That may have been the reason that Alta got a job.
Alta's mom d. in 1930, and Alta remained in Harlan until her demise in 1968. She chose to remain with her par.s and did not marry. I looked to see if she had a health or mental problem, and I found nothing. Maybe she was just a wall flower.
