Civil War Union Army Officer. Descended from an old and distinguished family of Cork, Ireland, he served five years in a British Yeomanry regiment before joining the Irish Battalion of the Army of Pope Pius IX as a Captain and company commander. He was distinguished for his bravery in the Italian War of 1860, and emigrated to America the following year where he served with honor in the Civil War as a Captain of Regular US Infantry, a Cavalry staff officer, and as Colonel and commander of the 15th New York Volunteer Cavalry. Remaining in the US Army after the Civil War, he eventually attained the rank of Major General at the time of the Spanish American War of 1898. John Coppinger married Alice Blaine, daughter of Senator and Presidential candidate James G. Blaine, in 1883. They had two sons, Blaine and Conor Coppinger.
