Valda was born on December 12, 1931 in Chelsea, Mass., a daughter to Samuel H. and Valda R. (Parks) Jillette and moved at a young age with her parents to Turners Falls, Mass. Valda was educated in Montague Public Schools, graduating from Turners Falls High School in the Class of 1949. She was affectionately known as ''Val'' to most of her friends and acquaintances.
Following her graduation from high school, she accepted a position with the Montague Rod and Reel Company, which was followed by employment with WHAI Broadcasting Company, where she worked for the Haigis family at the radio station in the business office. After devoting a number of years as a stay-at-home mother and homemaker, Valda returned to work with positions at Historic Deerfield, first as a tour guide in the historic houses, then many years in a position as bookkeeper. In semi-retirement after Historic Deerfield, she worked as a bookkeeper at Greenfield Co-operative Bank and Titex Tools.
She was active as a volunteer in numerous organizations, devoting her time, talents and charitable giving in support of activities and services that enrich our community. They included the Franklin Area Survival Center; the Board of Organized Work at Baystate Franklin Medical Center; the Greenfield Senior Center at the Weldon House and at BHS Ambulance Service. Valda enjoyed many hobbies including flower gardening, knitting, reading (recently enjoying Archer Mayor detective/crime novels), traveling, enjoying community theater, as well as music (particularly Frank Sinatra and The Three Tenors) and a lifelong love of cats which included her beloved pet ''Molly.''
Valda had a wonderful singing voice and was a member of her church choirs for many years. In previous years she enjoyed being very active in other church activities at the First Congregational Churches of Greenfield and Turners Falls, and in later years she continued to be involved in groups such as Evening Circle and Friends In Council.
Above all, Valda enjoyed time with her family and friends. She was a wonderful and devoted mother, sister, daughter, ''auntie,'' grandmother, and friend--giving so much to those who knew her. She was known to so many as the kindest person once could ever meet. She was also known for her memorable, frequent, and irrepressible laughter. Valda was very loving, and in turn was loved dearly by so many who will miss her more than words can express.
She was married to the now late, Edward B. Stowe on Sept. 15, 1957 and celebrated nearly 45 years of marriage together prior to his passing on Sept. 1, 2002.
Survivors include her loving sons: Denison E. Stowe and his wife, Lisa, and their son Jeremiah of Greenfield, Mass.; Fraser R. Keller-Stowe and his wife, Lisa, and their daughter Samantha of South Deerfield, MA. Her devoted brother: Penn Fraser Jillette and his wife, Emily of Las Vegas, Nev. Additionally there are several nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.
