His funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton. J. Kent Hickerson will officiate. Burial will be at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Kenney, with military honors at the gravesite. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. He was born July 14, 1920, in Maroa, son of Arnold and Cora York Mears. He married Ruby May Goodman on April 1, 1946, in Clinton. Ruby passed away Oct. 10, 1997.
He is survived by one daughter, Helen (David) Wilkins, Chenoa; granddaughter, Tonya Allen; grandson, Jarod Mears; great-granddaughter, Brenna Allen; and sister, Mildred Maddox, Clinton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Reed Mears; and three brothers, Roy, Donald and Chester Mears.
He was a proud veteran of World War II, enlisting in the U.S. Navy in September 1942. He served on the USS Circe. He trained as a deep-sea diver and was discharged in December 1945.
He farmed and worked at Revere Copper & Brass in Clinton for 33 years, retiring Nov. 1, 1985. He enjoyed his family, camping, gardening and giving his produce away. Many people benefited from his generosity
